950 - Severe bug that can result in accidental file/folder deletions

#1 Post by Free4all » 25.06.2026, 11:59

There is a nasty bug in FreeCommander that I have been spending a considerable amount of my time trying to isolate. It has been exceedingly challenging to isolate, but it has resulted in data loss multiple times, so I have persisted. This severe bug has plagued FreeCommander for years. I literally have been trying to isolate this bug during this entire period. At long last, I have been able to create reliable STR that isolate this bug and reproduce it.

I tested to verify this bug continues to be present in the latest FreeCommander XE donor release for Windows 11: FreeCommander XE 2026 Build 950 64-bit.

STR - To illustrate this nasty bug, follow these steps exactly:

1. In a FC file pane, navigate to any folder that contains more than 2 items (folders/files).
2. Press the down-arrow keyboard key 2 times.
3. Using the mouse, shift-click on any item in file pane further down in the list. This should select all items from the item selected in step 2 to the item on which you shift-click.
4. Notice that more items are selected than should be. All items from the top of the list will be selected!

This bug violates the user's expectations and can even select items not current displayed in the pane. This bug can be devastating because if - after the steps above - the user performs a delete operation, UNINTENDED FILES AND FOLDERS WILL BE DELETED. :fire:

No problem here.
Have you tried with default settings?

I can reproduce it with default settings:
- folders 1, 2, 3, multiple jpg files
- go to [..] item
- press down arrow 2x
- focus is at folder 2

- shift+click the second file
= result folder 1 is selected too, it should not be selected

It's even more random when using arrows to select the file in the middle and then shift+click, even multiple files are selected, or not selected, as it should be.

BTW It's a regression.

OK, it looks, that if I click to item X, then use arrow key multiple times to go to other item, then shit+click another item, selection is created from last "clicked" item, not from the actually selected item.

It works good with NC-mode, it can be used as a workaround (Select items in NC-mode and Extented sekection with Shift and Ctrl).
